How to finance your internship

Within Your University

Most universities have a wide range of scholarships for studying abroad. You can check with your university to see which scholarships they offer. You should go to your study abroad/global engagement office, your college, and your department/major. Sometimes your department might have travel funds that can help with your airfare or other funds that will help you with your program fee. There are some links to a few of the universities we work with below, but we can help you with your university, too.

If you are earning credit for this internship, any financial aid that you currently receive can be used for study abroad. These might include University Financial Aid, Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, Plus loans, Perkins Loans, Hope scholarships, or Presidential Scholarships through your University. Most universities have Financial Aid Advisors within the Study Abroad/Global Engagement Unit to help you.

Tax-Free Funds for Education Expenses

Plan ahead and use 529 money. Study abroad qualifies for 529 usage and is a legitimate educational expense. We can provide a letter for your records or for your accountant.

Local Fundraising

Tap into your local community: If you grew up in a community, try to raise money from your church, rotary club, scout troop, or other civic organization.

Underrepresented Groups

If you identify with an underrepresented group, there are often additional opportunities. You can search your university and “Bipoc”, “First gen”, “Latinx”, “Multiracial”, “Pacific Islander”, or another word that reflects your identity.
